Local festivals begin with June Jubilee PDF Print E-mail

The community of Milligan will celebrate the 25th annual June Jubilee on June 8-10, with events centered around the Fillmore County village’s Centennial Garden.

The weekend kicks off at 6 p.m., this Friday, when the Centennial Garden opens. The co-ed softball tournament also starts at 6 p.m.

Music in the outdoor Centennial Garden will feature, on Friday evening, Music Maniac Karaoke and D.J. at 7 p.m. On Saturday, the Dave Salmons Trio starts the line up at 3 p.m. with polkas and waltzes, followed by one of Omaha’s best classic rock and roll bands, Taxi Driver, at 8:30 p.m. On Saturday, there is no admission charge during the afternoon. On Sunday, garden admission is free all day, with the Milligan Czech Brass Band at 3:30 p.m. and the Blue River Czechs at 4:30 p.m.

Saturday is tournament and contest day, with the Rooster Run registration starting at 7:30 a.m. at Fifth and Main, the co-ed softball tournament continuing at 9 a.m. and sand volleyball tournament starting at 9 a.m. The antique tractor pull starts at noon. The road rally starts at noon with line-up at 11:30 a.m. on Main Street. The pork rib and loin cook-off contest in Centennial Garden is judged at 4 p.m. and served at 5 p.m., with participants cooking in the garden all day.

Sunday is family day, with free admission to Centennial Garden free all day. The day starts with a polka mass with Leo Lonnie Orchestra at 8:30 a.m. at the St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church, followed by a breakfast at 9 a.m. United Methodist Church services are at 9:15 a.m. and their country store food sale is at 10:30 a.m. in the garden. A chain saw artist also starts at 10:30 a.m. The grand parade starts at 1:30 p.m. with this year’s theme “Margaritaville.” The traditional kids pedal pull starts at 2:30 p.m., in the garden. The inflatables open on Main Street and in the garden at the same time. Some of the inflatables are inside the garden for the convenience of parents of young children.

Finishing out Sunday will be the Milligan Czech Brass Band and lawn mower races at 3:30 p.m. and a beef supper will be served out of the back of the Milligan American Legion building by the Sons of American Legion starting at 4:30 p.m.

Wood carvings made by the chain saw artists will be auctioned off at 7:30 p.m. For more information on this event, contact Scott Oliva at 402-629-4446.
