Ohiowa Legion Birthday Celebration

The American Legion is celebrating 98 years this year as the patriotic Veterans organization that was chartered by Congress on September 16, 1919. The Ohiowa Franklin Post No. 193 was chartered on August 10, 1920. Today there are 22 members, with a combined 617 years of service in the Ohiowa Legion.
The Ohiowa American Legion Auxiliary Franklin Unit No. 193 was chartered on May 14, 1927, and currently has 45 members with 721 years of service. The Auxiliary provided a supper on March 21, to honor the Legionnaires. Forty-one Legion, Auxiliary, Sons of the Legion, and guests enjoyed the meal. A special cupcake American flag was made by Auxiliary member Sara Bulin.
A short program was given by Auxiliary President Vicki Ozenbaugh. She shared some of the history of The American Legion, including the formation of the Legion Family. It consists of The American Legion, The American Legion Auxiliary, the Sons of the American Legion, and the Legion Riders. Ohiowa’s Sons of the Legion was formed in 1986. They have 69 members with 1,161 years of service.
Special certificates were presented to Kenneth Mussman and Don Nun for their 59 years of membership. Ione Schelbitzki has been an Auxiliary member for 72 years. Twenty SAL members that were charter members received a certificate. They were Gary Bulin, Gaylen Dunse, Matt Dunse, Steve Dunse, Larry Nun, Jeff Ortgies, Mitch Ozenbaugh, Phillip Ozenbaugh, Russell Ozenbaugh, Dan Pennington, David Rippe, Ross Rippe, Seth Rippe, Roger Schropfer and Alan Theobald.
Recognition was given to Auxiliary members with 10 years of membership to Glenda Gaston, Lisa Kimbrough and Karolyn Ozenbaugh; with 20 years to Karen Sims; with 30 years to Jan Wolfteich; and with 40 years to Vicki Ozenbaugh. SAL members receiving certificates were Ryan Kamler and Wyatt Ozenbaugh for 10 years and Mark Kendall and Drew Kendall for 30 years.
