Shickley Public School Elementary students and several community members participated in a 5K walk/run held Friday, May 20, the last day of school in Shickley. It was the final event of the “Commit To Be Fit” wellness program that was new this year at the school. The wellness program, which was introduced to students in kindergarten through sixth grade and faculty at Shickley in November 2010, has resulted in nutritional awareness—helping both youth and adults learn to make good food choices and become more physically active. Also incorporated into the program is “Forever Fit,” the community’s group of senior citizens, who meet three times a week for exercise class. Their job is to log exercise minutes for the students. The committee who made the Commit To Be Fit program become a reality includes Gina Kamler, Kari Jo Alfs and Miki Loos, registered dietician.
