The Davenport-Edgar Junior Legion Baseball team ended another successful season with a district championship and a third place finish at the state tournament. In the districts at Hebron, D-E defeated Lawrence-Nelson and then had three hard-fought wins, defeating Hebron followed by two wins over Sutton.
D-E also had to play Hebron and Sutton in districts last year and the quality of those teams really prepared the team for state in both seasons.
At the state tournament in Pender, D-E opened against Valparaiso. D-E took a 2-0 lead into the fourth inning, but the walls caved in, and an 11 run inning for Valparaiso resulted in a 13-3 win.
Davenport-Edgar then defeated Overton 8-5, and Hartington 10-0 in five innings to earn a rematch with Valparaiso. After falling behind 4-0, D-E came back to tie the game and send it into extra-innings.
Davenport-Edgar took a 7-4 lead in the top of the eighth inning, but Valparaiso answered with four runs in the bottom of the eighth for the win. Valparaiso went on to win the state title the following night.
After a second-place finish at state a year ago, this team had a goal of winning a state championship and was disappointed at not doing so. But with only Kendrick Holeman and Chase Murman moving up to Senior Legion next year, the nucleus is there for another good team.
