On April 7, 18 members of the Fillmore Central FFA departed for the 82nd Nebraska FFA State Convention. Ten of the FC FFA members attended the opening session followed by the hypnotist, while the Junior Parli Pro team, consisting of JuliAnna Capek, Morgan Monteforte, Whitney Lovegrove, Austin Tatro, Danny Wythers, Megan Schiermeyer, and Brielle O’Brien, competed in the preliminary rounds at state. They took their test first and then did their presentation. They would later find out on Friday evening that they received a bronze plaque for the team.
On April 8, sponsor Annette Smith took Brette Gebers, Carl Jacobson, Lydia Smith, Ashton Soukup, JuliAnna Capek, Kyle Karcher, Thane Motis, and Danny Wythers to UNL’s East Campus to compete in Livestock Judging. The Junior Livestock Judging Team consisting of JuliAnna, Kyle, Danny, and Thane, received a blue ribbon in Junior Livestock Judging. Individually Kyle was third overall, Thane received red, and JuliAnna received white.
In Senior Livestock Judging, Brette and Ashton received blue ribbons, Lydia received a red, and Carl received a purple. The team also received a purple ribbon.
Also that morning, Kelsie Goc, Morgan Monteforte, and Whitney Lovegrove competed in the Nursery and Landscape Career Development Event (CDE) in which Whitney received a white and Morgan received a red. Everyone else who was not competing that morning attended sessions and workshops at the Cornhusker Hotel.
Throughout the day, members watched LSE’s, Leadership Workshops and visited the college booths. Thursday afternoon, JuliAnna Capek, Brielle O’Brien, Megan Schiermeyer, Danny Wythers, Kyle Karcher, Thane Motis, Whitney Lovegrove, and Morgan Monteforte attended the Leadership Academy at the Cornhusker. Also Dylan Colgrove, Dillon Steinacher, Bria Wythers, and Austin Tatro competed in Agriscience. Bria and Austin received reds and Dylan received a white. Then all the members joined for a dinner and finished the day attending the third session at the Pershing Auditorium. During this session, advisor VanDeWalle received his Honorary State Degree.
On April 3, Annette Smith took the welding team of Jake Martin, Carl Jacobson, and Austin Tatro to compete. Advisor VanDeWalle took Kyle Karcher, Thane Motis, Megan Schiermeyer and Brielle O’Brien to compete in Natural Resources. Kyle received a blue and Thane received a red.
Throughout the morning members watched the finals of Junior and Senior Parliamentary Procedure and attended Leadership Workshops. Friday morning ended with a tour of the Animal Science building on East Campus. The tour included seeing genetically altered mice that have been produced to glow green when looked at with a black light and seeing the cattle that have openings in their rumen stomach for research purposes.
After enjoying some down time and shopping and going to Champions Fun Center, all of the delegates attended the last session of the 82nd Nebraska State FFA convention. Chaperones to the convention included Gary and Annette Smith, Jodene Lovegrove, Steve Schiermeyer and Karla Jacobson.
