Food Needs And Costs

May is Community Action Month and as a Community Action organization, Blue Valley Community Action Partnership celebrates the month.

However, recent news that “Higher Food Prices are Coming Soon” indicates costs for most food items will be higher due to droughts across the country, particularly in areas like California and Texas where a lot of produce is grown.  The drought has also impacted beef prices, while disease is having an impact on pork prices.  Even fish prices are rising due to disease and overfishing.  This is bad news for the working poor who are consumers of our services.

The majority of our neighbors, who come to us for help, are working, however are not making enough to cover the costs of basic needs – “the working poor.”  Since May is Community Action Month, we ask the community to be generous to our food pantries and other pantries in their communities.  We would not like to see food shortages, not because of lack of supply, but because of higher costs, become an issue in the farm belt.

Often our pantries are filled at holiday times, but as we approach hotter weather they seem to fall off, while the need remains.  Community generosity will be a celebration for us at Blue Valley Community Action Partnership that allows us to help the needy, who are trying to help themselves out of situations often beyond their control.  If you wish to contribute foods to BVCA Partnership pantries, please contact the local BVCA office in each county.  Items particularly needed include canned meats, basic ingredients for cooking such as: oil, flour, sugar, cheese, etc.  Also needed are toilet tissue and other paper products.

Our celebrations of the month conclude Saturday, May 31 with the second annual “Duck ‘N’ Run” family fun day to be held at Crystal Springs Park in Fairbury, Nebraska.  Everyone is invited to bring their family to a day of fun with 10k run, a two mile run or walk, rubber duck races, face tattoos for kids, bounce house and great food.  More information can be found at our website www.bvca.net or by contacting your local BVCA Partnership office.

Blue Valley Community Action has been blessed by being located in Nebraska’s Blue Valley region, where residents have come forth whenever a need arises.  We appreciate the support given to our organization locally and wish everyone a very safe and prosperous May – a real Community Action Month.
