Excitement is building as the “Big Little Town” of Shickley prepares to host a stampede of an event, Longhorn Days; the biggest community shindig since the Q-125 that was celebrated in 2013.  The Shickley Sons of the American Legion (SAL) Squadron No. 164  is partnering up with the Big Little Town (BLT) Revitalization Club to provide activities and enjoyment for all ages on Saturday, June 22.
“We just want to have an event, a celebration.  We haven’t done one for years,” says Brock Domeier, BLT Club member. “It works to piggyback with the Legion in their efforts to maximize the event.  It will be a fun filled day for everyone.”
Step up to the starting line-up for a 5K/10K Fun Run, followed by a Co-ed Softball Tournament.  If you would rather cool off, dig into the fun with Mud Volleyball.  Stroll through Shickley history at the Virgil Biegert Library Museum and take a look at the Show and Shine Car/ Tractor show on main street.  Get your number called to win a prize at the Bingo tables sponsored by the Shickley Legion Auxiliary Post  No. 164. A meal will be served in the community building.
Kids will love the events for the day.  They can sing along with the String Beans, jump their jiggles out in a bounce house and get all warm and fuzzy at the petting zoo.  Splash in the swimming pool.  Admission is free.
The SAL events include the Midwest BBQ Association-sanctioned Rib Cook-off going on all day.  A meal will be served. In the evening, Nebraska’s Emmitt Bower Band will take the stage at 8:30 p.m., with its rocking country sound that is known nation-wide.
“The SAL is hoping that proceeds from the day will give us enough funds to start construction on the 50 Flags Veteran’s Memorial.  We have currently raised over $315,000 for the project. ” SAL member Wade Walters said. See advertisement inside detailing the special gun raffle and auction being sponsored by the Shickley SAL.
But the fun doesn’t stop there.  On Sunday, June 23, an 18 Hole, four-man scramble will be held at Hidden Hills Golf Course in rural Geneva.   For details and registration information, check out http://www.biglittletown.us. and click on the “Events” tab.  Round ’em up and enjoy the day with your friends and family, celebrating summer and Shickley at Longhorn Days!
