Fire departments from Geneva, Milligan and Fairmont responded to a fire at Sargent Drilling Sunday afternoon around 1:45 p.m. A passerby phoned the blaze in and because of no fire hydrants being located near the fire site, the other departments were called in for mutual aid to help provide water, Geneva Fire Chief Steve Yates said. About 30 firefighters from Milligan and Fairmont were on the scene for about an hour on January 29, according to Yates. He also said 32 Geneva firemen participated in some way at the fire scene.
Yates said the cause of the fire is still undetermined and his department remained on the scene for over three hours. “It made for a busy Sunday for sure,” Yates said. A good deal of the smoke was caused by insulation burning, Yates said. The Geneva fire chief also said damage estimates were still being determined, but they could approach $200,000.
