The month of June is a popular one for weddings. So, it makes perfect sense for the Fillmore County Museum in Fairmont to show off about a dozen of its wedding dresses in its permanent collection. A special event during the first weekend of the month will have many more vintage weddings dresses on display.
The Fillmore County Historical Society will be hosting a “Vintage Wedding Dress Display with Tea & Scones” this Saturday and Sunday, June 1-2, from 1-5 p.m. Both museums will be open to display the dresses with the tea taking place at the north museum. Tickets are available at most banks in Fillmore County and at Cumberland’s Style Shoppe in Geneva.
The event will feature nearly 40 wedding dresses displayed on specially-made racks assembled by the Shickley FFA Chapter for a community-service project. Historical Society member Bonnie Dondlinger’s husband, Charlie, made the model that was used for the racks.
Included in the dresses displayed on June 1-2 will be several from the Shirley Trauger collection. Other dresses will come from all parts of Fillmore County. One of the dresses was made from a parachute and is on loan from the Thayer County Museum. Dondlinger’s wedding dress will be apart of the display.
“There’s also a couple that are colored,” Dondlinger said. “They’re not all just white.”
A short description of the dress will accompany each display, along with who was married and a wedding picture if available. Another dress was worn by a mother, and then later, by her daughter. The oldest dress in the display dates back to 1885.
Tea and scones, reminiscent of former times, will be served at the fund-raiser for the local Historical Society. Several types of scones will be featured at the event. The museums in Fairmont have recently been tuck-pointed and more building upgrades are planned.
