As the result of funds from a grant awarded by the Fillmore County Foundation and donations from many generous patrons, the Fillmore Central Elementary BackPack program has been launched.
A partnership with the Food Bank of Lincoln, United Methodist churches of Geneva and Fairmont and Fillmore Central Elementary has provided the framework that allows several Fillmore Central students to receive backpacks filled with approximately six pounds of food each week.
The mission of the backpack program is to help alleviate the problem of childhood hunger by providing children with nutritious and easy to prepare food at times when other resources are not available, such as weekends and school vacations. The program provides backpacks filled with food that is child-friendly, nonperishable, and easily prepared and consumed.
Community volunteers pack bags of food, which are then transported to the school for distribution to the students. Pictured are volunteers Nancy Jo Galusha, Jo Ann Heath, Jay Chapman, Vicki Lovegrove, and Vicki Milsap packing bags. Also volunteering is Karla Sheffy-Harris, but not pictured.
If you are interested in helping with this program please contact Nancy Jo Galusha, Karla Sheffy-Harris, Jo Ann Heath or Fillmore Central Elementary for more information.
