Sorge inducted into NHSACA Hall of Fame

Fillmore County has a new inductee into the National High School Athletic Coaches Association (NHSACA) Hall of Fame. Dan Sorge, a 1972 Graduate of Geneva High School, was one of 39 coaches from across the country to be inducted into the 2025 NHSACA Hall of Fame class.
The Hall of Fame Ceremony was held in Rapid City, S.D., on Tuesday, June 24. The inductees came from Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Louisiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Montana, Nebraska, New Jersey, New Mexico, North Dakota, South Carolina, South Dakota, Texas, Wisconsin, and Wyoming,.
Each inductee was introduced with a biography of their career and received an engraved glass plaque. Following is Sorge’s story.
“Our next inductee is Coach Dan Sorge from Strang. With the village of Strange having a population of 32, he attended high school in Geneva then went to York Junior College in York, NE. He obtained a degree in Elementary Education from Lubbock Christian in Texas. Coach Sorge began teaching and coaching at Ohiowa High School in 1977. He began teaching and coaching at Shickley High School in 1979, where he stayed until retiring in 2015. His coaching included Bruning-Davenport/Shickley, while it co-oped with Shickley.
During his career, he coached volleyball to a 677-196 win/loss record and boys and girls basketball to a record of 281-85. His teams earned 13 District titles, 11 Conference championships, and seven State crowns. In boys basketball, he led three District championship teams and one State title in 1997.
Coach Sorge served on the Nebraska Coaches Association All-Star Selection Committee in 1988, 1989, 1991, and 1992. Coach was named Nebraska Coaches Association Coach of the Year for 1990-1991, was head coach of the All-Star games within the conference, twice was Media Coach of the Year, received the Phyllis Rice Honner Volleyball award, was honored for 35 years of service, and in 2022 was inducted into the Nebraska Sports Hall of Fame.
Probably the highlight of his coaching career was being the coach for the first Nebraska School to win six consecutive volleyball state championships. His teams broke the previous record of 74 consecutive wins with 104 straight volleyball matches won. But even more important was the stories and relationships that were forged from those streaks.

Those attending the banquet and ceremony, locally, were Vicki Ozenbaugh, Chris and Julie Dunker, and Dick and Phyllis Schoenholz.
