Preliminary plat OK’d; police contract approved

The Geneva City Council worked through a light agenda at the council’s first regularly-scheduled meeting in August.
Among the items on the August 3 agenda were:
• The city council opened and closed a Public Hearing for future land use in the proposed Highway 81 Development area. The city is proposing to purchase farmland near the intersection of R Street and U.S. Highway 81 south to the current city edge. An access road could extend south off R Street along the western edge of the development area to a location near the City Water tower. Initially, and for several years at least, the access road would end in a crushed rock cul-de-sac about half-way through the project.
Several residents commented about the new possible exit out of town citing the high level of possible secondary traffic. Possible changes in traffic flows were discussed. Comments about the need to contain potential lighting aspects of new business development in this area were voiced. These concerns were mainly made if the development continues past its initial beginning.
The buried gas pipelines in the area were also discussed again. A significant amount of ground cover would have to be placed over the pipelines to allow for development.
“They have given us some specific guidelines on what we would need to do to make this work,” City Administrator Kyle Svec said.
A preliminary plat for the area was approved.
“There are lots of steps left with this,” Geneva Mayor Eric Kamler said.
