Panthers Down HSC; Improve To 12-4

During Homecoming Week, the Fillmore Central volleyball squad picked up five wins, including an oh-so-sweet victory over previously-undefeated and top-ranked Hastings St. Cecilia in the FC Volleyball Invite final on Saturday afternoon. With the five wins, the Panthers are now 12-4 and stand 11th in wild-card points in Class C-2.
With a main cog of its offense on the pine because of an injury sustained in the previous match, FC found itself down a set and behind 20-13 in the second set Saturday afternoon to the No. 1 team in Class C-2. No problem. The Panthers didn’t want to put the invite runner-up plaque in the trophy case.
Behind stellar offensive play by Halle Theis, FC downed the Hawkettes 11-25, 25-22, 25-16. Theis belted a match-high 14 kills and also paced the defense with 17 digs.
“This was a huge win for us,” Panther head coach Dawn Temme said. “We had a lot of girls step up and play in roles they weren’t used to. Jordan Broman did a great job stepping in as a setter. Baylee Alvarado stepped into a starting role and played well. Halle and Macy Scott stepped up huge and played amazing, as well as showing great senior leadership. We showed, as a team, we can play together and we can overcome adversity.”
Scott had 16 assists for the winners and Broman had 18. Erin Schmidt thumped five kills for the Panthers.
