Panthers Second At SC Invite

Fillmore Central went 4-1 in volleyball action last week to improve to 7-4 on the young seasoon. The Panthers won at Milford in five sets and Tri County (sweep) before earning runner-up honors at the 2019 Sandy Creek Volleyball Invite on Saturday, September 14.
FC got past Milford 22-25, 25-19, 25-18, 16-25, 15-12 last Tuesday. Lexi Theis had an outstanding all-around game against the Eagles. The Panther sophomore pounded 13 kills, put up 21 assists, smacked two ace serves and had seven digs. Erin Schmidt thumped 10 kills and Halle Theis had nine kills. H. Theis also tallied 17 digs and had 15 blocks. Macy Scott recorded 28 assists in the win.
FC downed the Lady Trojans 25-17, 25-7, 25-8 on Thursday, September 12. Schmidt crunched 13 kills and recorded six ace blocks. H. Theis had seven kills, belted an ace serve and had 11 digs along with a block. L. Theis whacked six kills, served up four aces and had 13 assists. Scott tallied 14 assists. Abby Nichols slapped down four kills and served up a pair of aces.
“Our starters did a good job of serving aggressively,” FC head coach Dawn Temme said. “We got some of our younger girls quality playing time tonight, too.”
The Panthers began play on Saturday with a big win over state-rated, 7-2 Superior. FC downed the Wildcats 25-10, 20-25, 25-22, on September 14, in rural Fairfield.
“We came out ready to play,” Temme said. “We stayed aggressive and played together. We stuck to our game plan and played extremely good.”
Next, FC downed Doniphan-Trumbull 25-10, 25-20 to advance to the tournament final in the very hot Sandy Creek gymnasium.
The Panthers fell to 7-1, Class C-2 Arcadia/Loup City 11-25, 25-23, 25-15 in the tournament final. FC rallied back to tie the second set at 23-23 after trailing by as many as eight points. The Rebels would get a kill off a Panther block and then another point off a poor FC pass to win the set and then roll in the final stanza.
FC hosts 3-1, Class D-1 Heartland this Tuesday.
